Everton vs West Ham Player Ratings

It was surely a tough game for all Evertonians as West Ham came back from a 2-0 deficit in the 78th minute after a missed penalty from Romelu Lukaku and many other botched chances. Everton played very well for most of the game despite being down to 10 men after Kevin Mirallas got sent off, but truly collapsed late in the game. Aside from all that, here are my match ratings:

Joel Robles – 6

Joel did great early in the game to keep Emmanuel Emenike from scoring after he had a great chance at point-blank range, but then conceded three goals in the later half of the game and looked shaky in net when West Ham started to gather some momentum. Although the goals were not necessarily his fault, he still could have done better later in the game positioning wise on those goals.

Brian Oviedo – 7

Looked good getting forward and had the assist to Romelu Lukaku’s early goal, and he overall good was when he was defending the ball in his wingback role. He looked more comfortable in the wingback role before Mirallas got sent off and then was forced to drop back into Left Back.

Phil Jagielka – 6

The Everton captain was solid for the large majority of the game before Everton collapsed and conceded three goals in the last 20 minutes of the game where he may have been responsible. Jagielka has never been great in that air and that really showed when West Ham scored two consecutive headers to draw the game level.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Ramino Funes Mori – 5

Funes, like Jagielka, was solid for the first 78 minutes of the game. He looked very composed on the ball and cleaned up defensively, but allowed for Antonio to lunge over him to score West Ham’s first goal and had a questionable moment where he may have taken down Ogbonna in the box off a corner.

John Stones – 7

Stones was subbed off at halftime for Muhammed Besic and played very well for when he was in and looked comfortable in his role as one of three centerbacks. Stones was obviously subbed out before Everton collapsed late in the game and it was clear that they really missed his presence in the air.

Seamus Coleman – 7

Coleman, like Oviedo, looked in place in his wingback role and was good defending when he dropped back and was in his usual effective attacking form when he got forward. He was asked to do a lot in the right side after Mirallas got sent off and seemed to do a decent job covering the holes with occasional help from Lennon.

James McCarthy – 6

Made some great tackles throughout the game, but also was booked on multiple occasions for relatively careless plays. He was rather ineffectual on offensive as per normal and at times made bad passes on crucial counterattacking opportunities. McCarthy was asked to be in a new role today as the only defensive midfielder and did a decent job, but he probably would prefer to play alongside Gareth Barry.

Arron Lennon – 8 MOTM

Lennon was superb today as he tracked back often to help on defense and had a great attacking presence as well. He scored a great goal where he surged past the defense following some link-up play with Lukaku and tucked it nicely away past the keeper. He presence was noticed all throughout the game with his high work-rates and when he was subbed off in the 76th minute, Everton suddenly looked vulnerable down the wings and subsequently two goals were conceded off crosses.

Kevin Mirallas – 4

Kevin Mirallas got a red card early in the game after a questionable yellow card for simulation and a yellow card for an absolutely carless and stupid challenge on Mark Noble. He looked decent on the ball before he was sent off, but his red card might have caused for Everton to lose the game although initially they recovered well.

Ross Barkley – 7

Barkley was skillful as always on the ball and was able to control the game with his great passing and dribbling for a large majority of the game. He could have done better to get a shot away after Seamus Colman gave his a very creative chipped pass on the top of the box, but otherwise he was solid.

Romelu Lukaku – 7

Lukaku had a great first goal using his strength and pace to get past the centerback and then was able to finish it perfectly into the far bottom right corner. He was great at controlling and bringing down the ball throughout the game and was a constant threat to score. Lukaku, however, missed a penalty and a chance on a breakaway that he really should have scored. If he was able to finish as he should have, he could have had a hat-trick.

SUB – Muhammad Besic – 6

Besic looked good attacking although he was in a defensive role and was able to draw a penalty that Lukaku would go on to miss. His high work-rate and intensity was not as impactful as it usually is and may have been slightly responsible for the three goals conceded late in the game.

SUB – Oumar Niasse – 6

Niasse was subbed on late in the game and was unable to have an impact on the game while he played alongside Lukaku or when he was alone up top. He drew a free kick that resulted in nothing while on a breakaway, but other than that, had no real impact on the game.
