Tom Davies put in a man of the match performance against a defeated Manchester City squad, which he capped off a wonderful goal, his first for the Toffees.

Davies,18, is playing like a man who has been in the league for years. His dominant display was capped off in the most deserving fashion, as he scored Everton’s third of the afternoon to put City to the sword.

Davies drove forward with power and intent, skinning both Gael Clichy and Yaya Toure before laying it off to Ross Barkley.

Toure didn’t follow Davies, who got the ball back from Barkley. Closed down quickly by Claudio Bravo, Davies expertly dinked it over the helpless keeper to score what will be his most memorable Everton goal. His shot took a slight deflection but that won’t matter to the local lad.

This has been coming for Davies, who has looked unstoppable since being introduced into the team. He had a brilliant festive period and looks like a man possessed.

Davies plays with explosive speed, rarely gives the ball away, tracks back exceptionally and, for such a young player, is never overpowered or overcome by his surroundings.

Things got even better for Everton, as another youngster exploded onto the scene.

Ademola Lookman rubbed salt all over City’s wounds as he also scored his first Everton goal after being on the pitch for only a few minutes. It may have been a quick debut for the 19-year-old, but it couldn’t have turned out any better. John Stones had a nightmare return to Goodison, further evinced by his poor clearance on Lookman’s goal.

Everton, with the addition of Morgan Schneiderlin, are going to be a formidable force, especially in a midfield that contains an in-form Ross Barkley, a re-invigorated Kevin Mirallas, a dynamic Davies, an experienced and reliable Gareth Barry and, of course, our defensive stalwart and man in the engine room, Idrissa Gueye.

And let’s not forget James McCarthy, who has just returned from a hamstring injury.

Next: Why Everton should not pursue Jose Fonte

The Toffees had four shots on target in the match, showing just how lethal they were in front of goal. The match also showed how little possession statistics matter. City enjoyed 71 percent possession but did nothing with it. Everton, with their 29 percent possession, were threatening and incisive.

Other than a disappointing FA Cup defeat, 2017 couldn’t have started any better for Koeman and company, who comprehensively beat a supposed world beater 4-0 at Goodison. Everton’s confidence will be sky high after this dream result.
