Would bringing Wayne Rooney back actually help Everton this coming season, or is it a move based more on sentimental value?

Every time you think Everton‘s weird and wonderful summer can’t get any more surreal, they are linked to yet another big-name player. However, the latest speculation may be the most surreal of all.

As per a report from talkSPORT, Wayne Rooney could well be set for an emotional return to Goodison Park. In fact, sources close to the Merseyside club have apparently told talkSPORT it is ‘almost inevitable’ Rooney will rejoin Everton.

The England national team’s record goalscorer has been weighing up his options since the 2016/17 campaign ended. This is in large part due to him no longer being an automatic selection in Manchester United’s starting lineup.

Rooney has always said he would never play for any other Premier League side apart from Everton, but would he actually return to where he started his glorious career? In addition, can he actually help the Blues, or would this be a move based more on sentimental value?

At first glance, you could make an argument for the latter. Consider that last season, 31-year old scored just eight times, for his lowest goal return since — ironically — his first year in the Everton first team.

However, this can partly be blamed on the fact Rooney only started 24 games all season. In addition, he often does not play as an out-and-out striker, which has also impacted his scoring tally in recent seasons.

In fairness to the Croxteth-born player, it didn’t stop him from overtaking Sir Bobby Charlton last season, as Manchester United’s top goalscorer of all time. With this in mind, along with the sentimental value, are Everton going to be bringing back someone based on what he’s done in the past?

The answer is yes and no. Yes, Rooney’s connection to the Toffees and his list of accomplishments probably do play a part in re-signing him.

However, there is more to it than that. Everton will also be re-signing the 2009–10 PFA Player of the Year, because of his experience of competing in big games and winning trophies.

In that respect, Rooney’s contribution to the team could be invaluable, as Ronald Koeman looks to build on a successful first season as manager. In addition, his work ethic is still second to none – something else which should have a positive impact on the other players.

Overall, Everton have everything to gain and virtually nothing to lose by re-signing the former fan favourite. Most supporters have forgiven him for leaving in 2004 and probably realise he can help lead Koeman’s revitalization of their beloved club.
