There was a welcome sight at Finch Farm on Monday, as Aaron Lennon joined the Everton squad for the first day of pre-season training.

When Everton returned to pre-season training on Monday, we provided a list of the players we expected to be in attendance. However, there was one player we didn’t make an allowance for.

As reported by the Echo‘s Phil Kirkbride, Aaron Lennon was also present at Finch Farm. Under the circumstances, this was a pleasant surprise for everyone concerned.

As most Everton fans are aware, Lennon was detained under the Mental Health Act on 30 April, as a result of concerns about his welfare. As reported at the time by the Daily Mail‘s Mike Keegan, he was taken to hospital to be assessed, after police officers were called to a location in Salford, Greater Manchester.

Everton also released a statement, which said:

"Aaron Lennon is currently receiving care and treatment for a stress-related illness. The club is supporting him through this and his family has appealed for privacy at this time."

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

This year has been a tough one in general for the 30-year old. He hasn’t played since February 11 and made just 13 overall appearances during the 2016/17 season.

However, Lennon’s presence at Everton’s training complex, is a positive step. Monday will have given some indication of his progress, as the players underwent tests, before taking part in their first full training session.

The England international joined the Blues in September 2016 for £4.5 million, after a successful loan spell. He has made 43 first team appearances in total and scored nine goals.

Overall, the main priority is for Lennon to be able to live a fulfilling life off the field. However, if he can get back to contributing for Everton, it will be a nice bonus and a real boost to the team.

Obviously, the number one concern is that Lennon has been getting the help he needs, to continue leading a full and prosperous life. However, do you see him being involved with the team this coming season? Or have you not even given it any thought at this stage?
