With the recent flurry of summer signings and increased competition, could Aaron Lennon’s time at Everton be about to come to an end?

When Aaron Lennon turned up at Finch Farm for the start of pre-season training, it represented an unexpected but pleasant surprise. When he scored a goal in Everton‘s 3-0 friendly win over FC Twente, we cheered and hoped it meant he could still be an effective member of the team.

However, we also cautioned the Blues would not push Lennon too hard, after what he had been through earlier this year. This seemed to be confirmed, when he was left out of the squad for the first leg of Everton’s Europa League third qualifying round tie, versus Ruzomberok.

Maybe we should have also seen this as a sign of the 30-year-old’s importance to the team. Even more so, if new speculation from the Mirror is anything to go by.

As reported by the Mirror‘s John Richardson, Watford are looking to make an offer for Lennon. New boss Marco Silva is a big fan and wants him to move to Vicarage Road, as the Hornets prepare for another tough battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Watford believe they have a genuine chance, with the recent flurry of signings moving the winger down the pecking order at Goodison Park. Richardson notes the Hornets are open to either taking him on loan, or permanently for a small fee.

The question is, would Everton be prepared to let Lennon go? He’s had his moments on Merseyside and theoretically still has something to offer?

Part of the answer comes from the former England international’s current contract, which is entering its final year. The Toffees need to consider if he wants to actually stick around and sign a new deal, or risk losing him for nothing next summer.

In addition, you get the feeling Ronald Koeman will do right by Lennon. If the player wants to improve his chances of regular first-team football, Koeman will likely help facilitate this request.

Overall, we’re sure most Evertonians would like to see Lennon stay at the club. However, they may have to accept his time on Merseyside is coming to an end.
