Captain Phil Jagielka isn’t going anywhere, as he signs a one-year contract extension and vows to help Everton create special memories for the fans.

You can make a strong argument that Everton fans are among the most loyal in the Premier League (and possibly professional football in general). As such, if they see the same loyalty from players, they will be forever loved – look no further than a certain Duncan Ferguson as a prime example.

Another player deserving of similar love, is Phil Jagielka. In fact, he is the Blues’ longest serving current player, having been with the club since 2007, after leaving Sheffield United.

The move certainly worked out well for Jagielka, as he got to play regularly at the top level of British football. In addition, it led to the start of his international career, which has seen him capped 40 times for England and score three goals in the process.

With all this in mind, it really should come as no surprise to hear the 34-year-old will be around for a while longer yet. As reported by BBC Sport, he has signed a one-year contract extension, which will keep him at Goodison Park until 2019.

The new deal is just reward for Jagielka, who has been through thick and thin with the Blues, while proving to be one of their more consistent performers. Entering the 2017/18 campaign, he has made an impressive 349 appearances in all competitions and scored 18 times.

It should be acknowledged the new deal is not simply about creating a feel-good factor and thanking the centre-back for his loyalty. There is a practical reasoning behind it, with Everton needing cover at the back, due to the long-term absences of Ramiro Funes Mori and Seamus Coleman.

Regardless, this is a move which should make all involved parties happy, from the player, to the team and to the fans. It means Jagielka will also likely continue as club captain, a mantle he took over ahead of the 2013/14 season.

As you’d expect, Jagielka is delighted with the new deal and motivated to help end the Toffees’ long wait for a trophy. Speaking to Everton TV, he said:

"“It is always nice to have the potential of an extra year with the Club – and it did not take too long for me to decide to sign. I was delighted to do so and I am looking forward to the journey over the next two years.“It has been a fantastic time here but, hopefully, we will create some more special memories in the next two years and I can look back on my time at Everton with a smile on my face.”"
