Everton only have themselves to blame if Sigurdsson move fails

Everton need to take a long hard look at themselves, with the deal for Gylfi Sigrudsson reportedly on the verge of collapsing.

Is this really want it’s come down to? Are Everton going to miss out on Gyfli Sigurdsson, due to a dispute involving minimal money – at least minimal in the fantasy world that is professional football.

As per a report from Jason Burt of The Telegraph, there are growing fears the Blues’ attempts to sign Sigrudsson may be on the brink of collapsing completely. If true, they only have themselves to blame.

Apparently, a fee of around £45 million, to be paid up front and with no add-ons, was verbally agreed with Swansea City. However, according to sources close to the deal, Burt writes that Everton are now attempting to renegotiate the terms.

This amounts to sheer lunacy on the part of the Toffees, who had already pushed their luck by refusing to increase their offer from £45 million to the £50 million Swansea wants. Now you’re telling us they aren’t even prepared to pay what they’d previously offered and verbally agreed to?

We may be an Everton-centric sports website, but we pride ourselves on being objective as much as possible in our analysis and opinions. However, we also consider ourselves fair, appreciating we don’t know for sure how accurate this latest information is.

Consider how many times in the last month, varying reports have come out. “A fee has been agreed.” “A deal is imminent.” “Sigurdsson isn’t going anywhere.” (You get the idea.)

Regardless of what the truth is, there is no denying both sides wanted this saga resolved before the start of the new Premier League campaign. If that’s still going to be the case, we now have less than three days and counting.

From Swansea’s point of view, this is probably working out just as they hoped. The reality is they never wanted Sigrudsson to leave.

This is entirely understandable, given how vital the Icelandic international was to the Swans’ survival last season. He scored nine goals, added 13 assists and created general havoc for the opposition.

The irony in all of this, comes from considering how much Everton have already spent this summer. Not all fees have been officially disclosed, but their total expenditure is estimated to be around £100 million.

Now, throw in the £75 million the Toffees reportedly received for Romelu Lukaku and it’s clear money is no issue to them. Again, assuming the latest news is true, you’re really going to now tell us they will miss out on Sigurdsson, for a minimal disagreement on a fee – sorry guys, but you’ll get no sympathy or understanding from us.
