Seamus Coleman has started running again for Everton, nearly five months after suffering a sickening leg injury while playing for the Republic of Ireland.

Everton fans haven’t exactly been short on good news recently. From all the new signings, to qualifying for the playoff stage of the Europa League, there has been plenty to be optimistic about.

In any event, Evertonians were given yet another reason to thank the footballing Gods on Friday, as Seamus Coleman resumed running at USM Finch Farm. It has been nearly five months since he suffered a shocking leg injury, after a horrific challenge by Wales’ Neil Taylor.

At the time, players from both sides were clearly affected by the injury to the Republic of Ireland captain, as he received treatment and was given oxygen on the pitch. And while there was no excusing the tackle, Taylor himself was devastated by what he had done.

Coleman suffered a fractured right tibia and fibula, which unsurprisingly ended his season. He underwent surgery soon after, with the early prognosis being he would not return to action until next year.

However, there is now some optimism the 28-year-old could be back before the end of 2017. Consider the words of physio Matt Radcliffe, in an interview with independent.ie:

"“There is no reason why Coleman should not be back in training in November and playing again a few weeks later,” Radcliffe said.“The big concern with an injury like this is nerve damage, but if it was a clean break and there are no infections or complications from the operation, I would expect Coleman to be back in training later this year and he could play again in 2017.”"

Signed for £60,000 at the start of 2009, Coleman has proved to be a real bargain for the Blues, with 247 appearances and 24 goals. His best season came in 2013/14, when he was named to the Premier League PFA Team of the Year, while also being voted Everton Player of the Year by both his teammates and supporters.

Undoubtedly, there will be questions about if the right back can return to the starting lineup, after the recent addition of Cuco Martina. For now though, the most important thing is he is showing every sign of making a full recovery.
