We rate every Everton player’s performance on an eventful night in Manchester, which saw them earn a well deserved point.
Okay, I give up – let’s talk some football! What an eventful night for Everton at the Etihad Stadium.
If we had told you beforehand the Blues would leave Manchester with a draw, most Evertonians would have taken it. And yet, there is a certain amount of disappointment emanating from the 1-1 result versus Manchester City.
Yes, the Sky Blues arguably deserved a draw, based on their performance in the second half. However, when you’re leading against 10 men inside the final 10 minutes, you’re bound to feel a bit deflated after conceding an equaliser late on.
Wayne Rooney had the highlight of the night, becoming just the second player after Alan Shearer, to score 200 Premier League goals. (Actually, his celebration and the reaction of the City fans was my personal highlight of the evening, which maybe says a lot about me.)
Bobby Madley went a bit card crazy, but we’re not hear to talk about him (too much). Let’s get to the player ratings:
Jordan Pickford (7/10)
Was a notch below the level he performed at in previous games, but still played well for the most part and made a key save late on. Everton look set at the goalkeeping position for many years to come.
Michael Keane (7)
Similar to Pickford, didn’t play up the same standard of previous outings. Regardless, he was a commanding presence at the back and provided a cool head, when Man City turned up the heat in the second half.
Ashley Williams (7)
Nothing fancy from Williams. However, did what was asked of him, to play his part in a solid overall effort from the Blues’ defence.
Phil Jagielka (8)
Don’t you always feel that little bit more confident, when the captain’s playing? Justified this confidence by arguably standing out from his fellow centre-backs.
Leighton Baines (7.5)
Typical energetic, reliable performance from Baines. He gets the extra .5 for his sliding challenge on Kyle Walker during the first half, which was arguably the tackle of the night.
Mason Holgate (6)
Played well for the most part and didn’t look out of place on the big stage. Regardless, fair or not, his rating takes a knock, due to the part he played in Man City’s equaliser.
Morgan Schneiderlin (6.5)
Was unable to have his typical influence, after an early yellow. However, he played well under the circumstances and was actually unlucky to be sent off late on. (Was the referee looking to atone for the earlier red he dished out?)
Idrissa Gueye (7.5)
Was his usual hard-working, physical, commanding self. We may just start copying and pasting this for all Gueye ratings.
Tom Davies (7)
Once again, Davies showed if you’re good enough, you’re old enough. Possibly the only sign of his youth was allowing himself to be booked for diving, although plenty of players who are older and should know better, make exactly the same mistake.
Wayne Rooney (8)
This Rooney bloke looks like he might be a decent player for the Blues. All (attempted) joking aside, he continues to show he is nowhere near finished yet, with his goal highlighting another performance where his winning mentality and experience will help Everton throughout this season.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (7)
We’ve raved continually about this kid and he showed once again what a special talent he is. Helped set up Rooney’s goal and, like Holgate and Davies, looks unphased on the big stage.

His lack of match practice was evident, thus justifying Koeman’s decision to only give him half an hour. Still, showed enough flashes to get Evertonians salivating at the prospect of what’s to come.
Davy Klaassen (6)
Interesting that he didn’t start, although it was actually understandable, given his indifferent start to the campaign. However, he did his part when he came on in the 61st minute and should only continue to look more like the old Klaassen as the season progresses.
Mo Besic (n/a)
Doesn’t deserve a rating. We’re not being harsh – he just didn’t appear until the 90th minute.
