We rate every Everton player’s performance on an eventful night in Croatia, which saw them advance to the Europa League group stage.

Has everyone managed to catch their breath? It’s fair to say Thursday night’s match was an eventful occasion for Everton, as they earned a 1-1 draw versus Hajduk Split.

In the process, the Blues earned their expected passage into the group stage of the Europa League. Just as importantly, it kept alive their alternative route to qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Ronald Koeman had a delicate balancing act in respect of picking his team, due to all the outstanding injury issues. The selection process was further compromised, by the fact this was the second of three away games in just seven days.

For the most part, Koeman got it right. About the only concern from our point of view, related to Rooney. (More on this shortly.)

Ultimately though, it’s tough to argue with the outcome, which helped maintain Everton’s unbeaten start to their competitive season. Let’s get to the player ratings:

Jordan Pickford (8/10)

Sometimes, it’s hard to believe he’s only 23-years-old. Another consistent performance. Some important stops, including the penalty save which essentially decided the tie. Couldn’t do anything about Hajduk’s goal.

Leighton Baines (7)

It really is tough to come up with anything new to write about Baines, who was captain for the night. Typical, energetic display, as he got up and down the left side all night, helping in defence and attack as and when needed.

Michael Keane (7)

Didn’t particularly stand out on the night, but we mean this in a good way. Calm, collected display at the back, including his usual excellence in the air. Even set up a chance for Rooney late on in the second half.

Ashley Williams (7.5)

Williams’ best performance of the season so far, providing the physical presence needed on a hostile evening in Croatia. The only reason his rating isn’t higher, is due to the penalty he conceded, after fouling Erceg.

Cuco Martina (6.5)

A slight dip, after an impressive start to the competitive season. However, Martina still did what was asked of him. If this turns out to be his worst outing of the campaign, coaches, teammates and fans alike will be extremely happy.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (9)

What a way to mark your first start for your new team, scoring an early contender for goal of the season. In fairness, even without his 50-yard wonder strike, Sigurdsson impressed with his use of the ball and effort throughout the night.

Morgan Schneiderlin (7)

Similar to Baines, a typical, reliable outing for Schneiderlin, who will be sorely missed on Sunday versus Chelsea. Calm and composed in midfield, with virtually ever pass finding its target.

Muhamed Besic (6.5)

Performed well, considering this was his first start for Everton in 16 months. Can still be a useful squad player and the only reason he is marked down, is due to picking up his “standard” yellow card.

Ademola Lookman (5)

We confidently expected Lookman to start last night, but he failed to reward the faith placed in him. Worst player on the pitch, he was predictably replaced at half time.

Wayne Rooney (7)

The sooner Sandro Ramirez returns, the better. Regardless, Rooney put in a typical hard-working display, as the lone striker. Our only concern is how this will impact his ability to influence Sunday’s game versus Chelsea, but that doesn’t take away from another good performance.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (6)

One of his less impressive outings this season, but he still worked hard – it just wasn’t his night. Played a part in conceding the penalty, after failing to clear the danger. Was eventually replaced, in the 72nd minute.

Substitutes:

Aaron Lennon (6)

Replaced Lookman at half time. Showed glimpses of what he is capable of, particularly with his pace. However, it remains to be seen if he did enough to convince the manager to keep him around.

Tom Davies (7)

Replaced Calvert-Lewin in the 72nd minute. When you can bring a player with the talent of Davies off the bench, you know you’ve got a good squad. Fit right into the action and didn’t waste a single pass.
