Despite a certain faction of the Everton fanbase calling for Ronald Koeman to be sacked, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Football fans could never be accused of being particularly rational or objective, when discussing the team they support. The recent reaction from Everton fans only reinforces this opinion.

More specifically, the calls for Ronald Koeman to be sacked. While no one argues the recent four-game losing streak was demoralising, to suggest Everton should get rid of their manager at this stage of the season, is ridiculous.

Now of course, we appreciate that people with anything negative to say, always stands out more, especially in the social media era. However, it has been interesting to read and hear the reaction of Evertonians.

Of course, this negativity was not as prominent, when Everton opened their competitive season with a four-game unbeaten run. However, as the saying goes, winning cures all ills.

For example, during the positive start, Koeman was seeing as a non-nonsense manager, who wouldn’t put up with any attitude from the players. Now, he’s seen as someone who’s too strict and falling out with everyone.

Similarly, when the team was winning, albeit unconvincingly, the perception was they were still gelling together, as a result of so many new faces. Today, it’s seen as a sign Koeman is a below-par manager, who is clueless when it comes to motivating his team to perform better.

Given that I currently live in the area, I decided to do a bit of an impromptu survey earlier this week, while I was out and about. This consisted of talking to friends and strangers alike — all Everton fans — to get their opinion of Koeman, and I’ll admit I was mildly surprised by the responses.

Keep in mind I only spoke to between 20-25 people in total, but the general consensus was still negative. In particular, fans referenced Koeman’s shortcomings when it came to tactics.

When I mentioned how well the team did last season in finishing seventh, this did little to pacify anyone. They said the same issues were evident then, with Romelu Lukaku’s 26 goals covering up a lot of the inadequacies.

In that respect, Lukaku is a good segue into another reason fans are overreacting to the poor start to this season. You could argue optimism was at its highest in at least a decade, entering the 2017/18 campaign, in large part due to the barrage of signings made during the summer.

Certainly, the addition of the likes of Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Gylfi Sirgurdsson and Wayne Rooney made this optimism justified. And yet, there was still plenty of discontent, when it came to Koeman’s inability to replace Lukaku.

Now don’t get me wrong – we’re not saying Koeman should be immune from criticism. Further, his man management skills and tactical prowess could well be what does end up costing him his job.

However, the 54-year-old deserves more time to get the team back on track. No matter how impatient Everton fans may be, sacking him so early in the season would be insane.
