Midfielder Idrissa Gueye will reportedly sign a contract extension with Everton this week, but it will come with one condition.

Last week, we shared information relating to a report that Everton were in talks with Idrissa Gueye, about signing a new deal. Initially, we were surprised, given he only recently started the second season of a four-year deal, which he agreed in August last summer.

However, the reason behind negotiating a contract extension, relates to the Blues’ concerns about potential interest from other clubs. Since moving to Merseyside, Gueye has been a key component in the team, as evidenced by being the top tackler in the Premier League during the 2016/17 campaign.

With this in mind, a new report has emerged, claiming the 28-year-old is set to sign a new deal sometime this week. As per the Daily Star‘s Marc Williams, the contract extension will be for five years and worth £75,000 per week.

This would understandably be good news for everyone concerned. However, the new deal will apparently come with one condition.

As noted by Williams, Everton and Gueye will likely have a gentlemen’s agreement, where potential future offers from Champions League clubs will be listened to. One club which has reportedly been keeping tabs on the player, is Chelsea.

Of course, one way for Everton to ease any fears about the Senegalese international leaving, is to secure Champions League football themselves. Unfortunately, this appears to be a pipe dream right now, given the Blues’ inconsistent start to the competitive season.

In that respect, Gueye has been one of the few players to regularly perform at a high level so far. It will be up to Ronald Komean to get other members of the squad to similarly raise their game, to increase the chances of his defensive midfielder seeing out his new contract.
