Everton are reportedly considering a move for Bas Dost in January, but is the Dutch international good enough to solve their scoring issues?

Here’s a sum for all you Everton fans to work out; when does 7+4=7? We’ll give you a minute to think about it….

Any luck? To be fair, you wouldn’t be blamed for not knowing the answer – it’s 7 games played + 4 goals scored = seven points.

Essentially, this is a convoluted way of telling you something you are already painfully aware of. In other words, Everton are having problems scoring goals so far this season.

Speculation is already rife about who the Blues will go for, when the transfer window reopens. In this respect, we can now add another name to the list of potential targets in January.

As reported by Peter O’Rourke of ESPN FC, Everton are keeping track of Bas Dost. Referencing sources close to the club, O’Rourke writes that they are weighing up if he is the man to solve their goal-scoring issues.

Certainly, Dost has attributes which could help the Blues. At 6 foot 5, he is the type of target man Ronald Koeman would love.

The Sporting Lisbon striker would likely also help the other players, especially Gylfi Sigurdsson, who has struggled since moving to Merseyside. While Sigurdsson has not been played in his ideal position, he has also not had as many opportunities to create chances, like he previously did with Swansea.

The Icelandic international is (usually) particularly effective from set pieces. Having the intimidating presence of Dost to aim for, would surely help in this respect.

Dost has been fairly prolific throughout his professional career, effectively scoring a goal every other game at club level. (166 goals in 329 appearances as of Oct. 10, 2017.)

The 28-year-old had one of his best campaigns in 2016/17, scoring 36 times in 41 total appearances for Sporting Lisbon. He’s also off to a decent start this season, with five goals in 8 games.

In addition, Dost has experience at the international level, albeit limited. He did not earn his first cap until 2015, but has since gone on to make 15 appearances for the Netherlands, scoring once during that time.

Sporting Lisbon only signed Dost in August 2016, so whether they would even be willing to sell him, remains to be seen. Regardless, as O’Rouke notes, Everton Director of football Steve Walsh watched him in action last month, so it will be interesting to see what happens in January.
