Everton are reportedly interested in Rosenborg’s Olaus Jair Skarsem, but what do we know about the young midfielder?

Everton being linked with young talent is nothing new. They are renowned for having one of the best youth systems in the country, best exemplified by winning the inaugural Premier League 2 title last season.

Refreshingly, the Blues haven’t rested on their laurels either, as they continue to search for other youngsters who can strengthen the setup. In this respect, they have now been connected to yet another highly-rated prospect.

As reported by ESPN FC’s Peter O’Rourke, Everton are one of a number of clubs across Europe, who have been scouting Olaus Jair Skarsem. Among the other teams interested, include Premier League rivals Liverpool, Leicester City, West Ham United and Brighton Hove Albion.

Sevilla are also long-term admirers of Skarsem. However, referencing sources, O’Rourke claims the teenager’s preference is to move to England.

So what do we actually know about the 19-year-old? Well for a start, he is rated as one of Norway’s hottest young talents in the last few years.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Skarsem made his first team debut for Rosenborg during last season in cup competition, marking the occasion with a goal. However, he is currently playing with the second team, as Rosenborg look to bring him along slowly.

The midfielder also has experience at the international level. He made his debut for the Norway U18 side in 2016 and has gone on to make seven appearances.

With all this in mind, you can understand why Everton are interested. However, the perception is other clubs will have a better chance of signing the youngster.

For example, Liverpool have a connection through Rosenborg’s sporting director Stig Inge Bjornebye, who used to play for them. In addition, as noted by HITC, Skarsem might fancy a move to West Ham, who already have fellow Norwegian Samuelsen in their ranks.

From Everton’s perspective, their best hope is to sell the strength of their youth setup, in the hope of persuading Skarsem they are his best bet at this stage of his development. Ultimately, it looks like he will end up in England; the only question is where?
