Everton: Is former England manager Sam Allardyce really a good fit?
By Paul Taylor
Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan believes Sam Allardyce would be a good choice to take over as Everton manager, but is he right?
Sam Allardyce taking over as the new Everton manager seems to be building up a head of steam. Go to any number of betting sites and the general consensus seems to be he is the second-favourite for the position, behind Sean Dyche.
Even Allardyce himself has admitted he would contemplate the job, if asked. As reported by BBC Sport, he said:
"“Who knows? I’d have to consider that, if that phone call happens.”"
Of course, you could argue the 63-year-old has to say that. It doesn’t mean he would actually accept the challenge.
However, even Allardyce must know managing Everton would be the most high-profile gig he’s ever had at club level. In that respect though, is he the right man for the Blues?
Most football fans are aware of the past controversies surrounding the six-time Premier League Manager of the Month. The most recent allegations led to him leaving his position as England manager after just one match in charge.
And yet, Allardyce could be exactly what Everton need, to get them out of their current predicament. Certainly, there are few men better equipped to fight — and survive — relegation.
This was something the former defender referred to, when asked about what the Blues need to do, to turn around their recent run of bad form. As per BBC Sport, he said:
"“They know what the problems are, they just perhaps want a bit of guidance now how to rectify those problems.“I’ve been in this position a number of times in the last three clubs I’ve had and I’d just put the team back to basics.”"
No doubt a lot of Evertonians will be against Allerdyce, because of his history of alleged dubious activities within the game. In addition, his style of play may not be something which appeals to the fans.

However, Everton are at a point where results are more important than flair. And if that means watching matches which are not aesthetically pleasing to the eye, then so be it.
Ultimately though, assuming Everton’s front office are even interested in Allardyce, it would be somewhat of a surprise if he actually accepts the job. Consider that back in July, he said his preference was to return to international football, rather than another club role.
Of course, you can never say never in this game. It should be an interesting few weeks, especially if David Unsworth doesn’t begin to produce positive results.
