Despite speculation linking Everton to Diego Simeone, there is little to no chance he will take over as the Toffees’ next manager.

There have been some interesting rumours doing the rounds recently, regarding who will take over as the next Everton. Burnley’s Sean Dyche was the frontrunner at one stage, before being overtaken by Sam Allardyce earlier this week.

However, the latest name being linked to the Everton job is the most intriguing yet. According to a report from Sky Sports, Diego Simeone is owner Farhad Moshiri’s preferred top target.

Yes, and Gemma Chan is my preferred choice of girlfriend. However, as with Moshiri’s preference, it has next to no chance of becoming a reality.

Apologies if that sounds flippant, as there is absolutely no criticism when it comes to aiming for the best. In that respect, Simeone definitely fits the bill.

The 47-year-old was an accomplished player with over 100 appearances for Argentine, who has made successful transition to management. His resume includes winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Europa League with Atletico Madrid.

However, Moshiri and Everton have to be realistic about who they can get, to take over as the next Blues manager. Sky Sports even point out that Simeone is happy at the club, having only recently signed a contract extension until June 2020.

Ray Wilkins is among those who believe Everton have no chance at signing Simeone. Appearing on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, the former England international said:

"“It’s going to take someone with a lot of bottle to go in there and sort it all out. But Simeone? Just leave that alone, don’t even go there!”"

We know financial compensation is no issue for the Blues, but Wilkins is absolutely right. They need to set their sights lower.

No doubt this is tough for Evertonians to take, with their beloved cub steeped in history and success. Unfortunately for the fans though, the sleeping giant has yet to show signs of truly waking up.

There’s little denying the likes of Allardyce and Dyche don’t sound particularly tantalising. However, at this stage it might be the best Everton can hope for.
