Everton are reportedly considering a move for Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij, but would face major competition from the likes of Juventus and AC Milan.

With January fast approaching, thoughts turn to who Everton will move for when the transfer window opens? It is sensible to assume a striker and left back will be their main priorities.

However, that doesn’t mean the Blues won’t consider other positions as well, pending how much money is available. Another possible target is a centre-back, to further solidify the back line.

As per a report from the Echo‘s Phil Kirkbride, that target could be Stefan de Vrij. Everton apparently have him on their shortlist of centre-backs they would like to sign.

Certainly, you can understand why the Blues would covet de Vrij. He is an excellent centre-back, who is particularly strong in the air, with his tackling and passing the ball out of defence.

About the only negative you can find with the 25-year-old, is a lack of pace. However, with his positioning and sense of the game, this rarely proves to be an issue.

After starting his professional career with Feyenoord, de Vrij has seen his reputation grow since moving to Lazio in 2014. He has also become accomplished at the international level with the Netherlands and was named to the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team in 2014.

De Vrij is in the final season of his four-year contract with Lazio, hence why Everton may have hopes of signing him. However — as you’d anticipate — it won’t be particularly straightforward.

As noted by Kirkbride, the Blues can expect competition from the likes of Juventus, AC and Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid. Overall, Everton cannot be blamed if they do make a move for de Vrij, but whether they can actually sign him is another matter entirely.
