Everton manager Sam Allardyce says James McCarthy will have to overcome a mental barrier, in order to return to full fitness.
When James McCarthy stepped out recently for the Everton Under-23s, it seemed his return to the first team was imminent. However, despite the demands of the hectic festive period, he has yet to feature in league action.
The question is, what’s the hold up? According to Blues boss Sam Allardyce, it’s conceivable it’s a psychological issue for McCarthy.
In fairness, Allardyce might be on to something. Consider that the 27-year-old has suffered several setbacks in his recovery this season, despite the fact his injury has never been anything particularly serious.
The former England manager is confident he can help McCarthy overcome any mental barriers, including using himself as a example. As reported by the Echo‘s Phil Kirkbride, Allardyce said:
"“If he talks to me about the fact I’ve suffered similar injuries in my time, hamstring as well, and how I got over mine and how I came through the other end with less tools available at that particular time than there are now.”More from Prince Rupert's TowerEverton 0 Arsenal 1: Blues fall to third home defeatFurther chaos in Everton takeover as other lenders not keen on 777 PartnersEverton need repeat of Arsenal win to kick-start their season on SundayMore madness at Everton as Moshiri now agrees to sell club to 777 PartnersEverton takeover talk cools after UK govt doubts and further questions"
Everton have been in fine form since Allardyce took over, going unbeaten in seven games. However, you can never have enough talent, which is where someone like McCarthy theoretically comes in.
Prior to last season, the Republic of Ireland international was an integral part of the team. Now, it’s a case of wondering if he has what it takes to return to the form from his first three campaigns in a Blues’ shirt.
Allardyce acknowledges this process will include putting the player in a positive frame of mind. As per Kirkbride, he said:
"“He’s certainly strong enough and physically he looks strong enough that this thing shouldn’t happen again – and hopefully it won’t.”"
Allardyce has already worked wonders with the team since arriving at Goodison Park, with several players taking their game to another level. Evertonians now wait to see if he can once again use his Midas touch, this time on McCarthy.
