Everton have recruited Martyn Margetson, but what do we know about Sam Allardyce’s new first-team goalkeeping coach?

Everton confirmed their final signing of 2017 on Saturday. However, it wasn’t a player.

As per the Daily Mail, Everton announced Martyn Margetson has been appointed as their first-team goalkeeping coach. The move comes as little surprise, given he had previously worked with Sam Allardyce on three occasions during his career.

This includes Allardyce’s ill-fated spell with England. The two men also worked together at West Ham United and Crystal Palace.

Margetson was in the dugout on Saturday afternoon, for Everton’s first defeat under Allardyce. However, the Blues’ new goalkeeping coach will have been extremely encouraged by the performance of Jordan Pickford, who did not deserve to be on the losing side.

The 46-year old enjoyed a long playing career between 1992 and 2007. During that time, he appeared in goal for clubs including Manchester City, Southend United and Huddersfield Town.

Margetson also earned one cap for Wales at full international level, in May 2004. He came on at the start of the second half and registered a clean sheet, in a 1-0 win against Canada.

It was during the final stop of his professional career, when Margetson first become involved in coaching. During his last season of playing football at Cardiff City he became player-goalkeeping coach, before retiring and taking over the coaching position full time.

With the appointment, Allardyce has now put together his preferred backroom staff, including Sammy Lee and Craig Shakespeare. The former England manager can now concentrate on strengthening the squad, when the transfer window reopens on Monday.
