As the end of the season approaches and the transfer rumour mill begins to gather pace, Everton are being linked with a potential move for Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere in the summer.

Everton are being linked with Wilshere because although he has been offered a new contract with the Gunners, the north London club’s offer involves the England man taking a pay cut.

It’s thought Wilshere would like to stay at the Emirates long-term but any pay cut would make the new contract difficult for him to accept.

So according to the Mirror, Everton are prepared to offer him more money to make the move to Merseyside and follow his former team-mate Theo Walcott who joined Everton in January.

The question is would a move for Wilshere make sense for the Blues?

Wilshere does divide opinion as to whether he is a genuinely top quality talent who will ever be able to fulfil the potential he showed when he first broke into the Arsenal side as a talked-up teenager.

Through a combination of injuries and his own off-field problems, Wilshere has failed to live up to that potential.

However I think that he can still be a good Premier League player if he can stay healthy and find the right environment.

The Blues’ have lacked craft and creativity in the middle of the park this season and the current options in midfield such as Tom Davies, Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin  are essentially willing runners and defensive players.

While on-loan midfielder Muhammad Besic is also basically a similar player to those already mentioned above.

Wayne Rooney can provide that inventiveness but he doesn’t convince me playing all the time in a deep midfield role and anyway he’s not a long-term answer.

And with an injury to Gylfi Sigurdsson as well as James McCarthy out again for a long time, any potential options to improve the quality of the Blues midfield should be considered.

Furthermore Everton lack scoring threats from midfield and given how much the Blues have struggled for goals this season, that is another area that needs addressing.

Wilshere could help fill those gaps. He has the talent to create chances and also score goals and it might just be a good move for him to leave Arsenal for a new challenge.

He had a good season last term when out on loan at Bournemouth and a permanent transfer linking up again with Walcott, could bring out the best in the player to the Blues’ benefit.
