Everton manager Sam Allardyce is confident that club record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson will return to the first team before the end of the season.

On Wednesday Everton announced that the midfielder would be out for six to eight weeks ruling him out of the remainder of the Premier League season.

But now according to Allardyce, Sigurdsson might be able to return sooner than expected and still contribute to Everton’s season as well as play for Iceland in the World Cup.

Allardyce was speaking at his Thursday press conference when he intimated that the Icelandic playmaker would be able to make a speedier return to action.

It true this is obviously great news for Evertonians as Sigurdsson was just beginning to find his best form for Everton in the last few games.

His influence was increasing and he was also developing a burgeoning understanding with striker Cenk Tosun.

Sigurdsson picked up the injury in Everton’s last match against Brighton but despite this played on to finish the match.

It’s possible his playing right through the game might have aggravated the injury. In any case Everton appear to be hopeful he will return sooner than at first expected.

Other topics Allardyce touched on in his pre-match press conference included Davy Klaassen. He suggested that Klaasen’s difficulties this season were an understandable reaction to moving to another country and league.

Hopefully this is something he will be able to overcome next season (assuming he’s still at Everton of course).

Klaassen might not have set Goodison alight this campaign but he does have talent and it would be good to see him given another chance next season.

Certainly his reception on Saturday when he came on late in the game against Brighton would suggest most Evertonians see a future for him at the club.

Allardyce also hinted he was keeping an eye on a few Sevilla players as possible transfer targets when he watched them defeat Manchester United in mid-week. As to whom they might be no word as yet.

Finally the manager also talked about the importance of the right mental attitude when approaching away matches.

This he felt was actually more important than formation or tactics in deciding whether the Blues can overcome their dreadful away record.

Lets hope that starts with Stoke City away on Saturday.
