Should Everton consider a move for Rashford?

There are stories in the press that the Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is unhappy at Old Trafford and would be open to a possible move in the summer, especially if Jose Mourinho is still manager.

Would Rashford be a good target for Everton?

According to reports in the Mirror, Rashford is fed up with a bit-part role at United and wants regular first-team football next season.

Apparently the final straw for the young England star was the Manchester derby last weekend when he only got onto the pitch for a few minutes.

With the World Cup coming up in a few weeks’ time, it’s possible that Rashford’s lack of regular football might prevent him from securing a seat on the plane to Russia.

Although I feel Everton should focus on midfield and defence when it comes to any summer spending, Rashford would be an interesting possibility and a player who would I think fit the Blues well.

The United striker feels that Mourinho is holding him back and preventing him from developing his career. A move away from the club he has been at since he was a teenager seems to be the only way forward.

Mourinho doesn’t have a great record when it comes to bringing young players through at the clubs he has managed. He has always favoured readily established players who can come into a side immediately.

He has of course been privileged to work at the biggest clubs in world football and so it is much easier to spend big sums on recruiting the best available players.

Everton have in recent years, partly as a necessity of course, a good record of promoting and developing young academy players.

In the last few decades, Francis Jeffers, Michael Ball (not the singer!), Wayne Rooney, Tony Hibbert, Jack Rodwell, Ross Barkley and most recently Tom Davies are all academy graduates who have played for the club.

United themselves like Everton, used to have just such a reputation think of the famous ‘Busby Babes’ in the fifties, local players like Nobby Stiles and of course the one and only George Best all came through the ranks at United.

And then came the Ferguson era when the club brought through the fabled ‘Class of 92’, with players such as David Beckham, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers.

Today though under Mourinho the younger players have had few chances to break into the team.

For Everton Rashford would seem a good fit a young hungry striker with the potential to be am outstanding footballer.

He would also be able to play on the left of a front three, something he has done well at United, despite it not being his preferred position.

In addition Rashford is a proven Premier League player rather than another forward from abroad who might take time to adapt to life in England.

It’s far from certain Everton would be able to persuade him to join the Blues, given that other big clubs are likely to be interested in the player. But Everton would be more likely to offer Rashford the regular first-team football he craves.
