Well that’s it as far as this season at Goodison Park is concerned and Everton could only manage a point against strugglers Southampton courtesy of a 96th minute equaliser from Tom Davies.

This performance was hardly what the long-suffering Everton fans would have hoped for to finish the campaign at home. But I doubt many were very surprised given what has gone before this season.

The Blues were once again laboured and unconvincing and it was the visitors who looked the more determined and dangerous.

And after creating several chances only denied by the excellence of Jordan Pickford in the home goal, Saints did go ahead through the lively Nathan Redmond.

Everton couldn’t respond and continued to struggle to get into the match.

Once more the Blues were unable to get enough quality possession or make enough chances and shots were few and far between.

Southampton continued to look the more likely to score the next goal and even the sending off of Saints defender Mayo Yoshida, didn’t alter the pattern of the game.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

It looked as though the Toffees were going to finish their season at home with another defeat until right at the death after six minutes of injury-time had been played, Davies deflected effort found the back of the net.

So the Blues had rescued a point from the game but not much else. There were more boos at the final whistle after another lacklustre Everton display.

This corrosive atmosphere cannot continue as it will prove a costly distraction next season. It’s hard enough to succeed in the Premier League these days without all this off-field stuff.

Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri was in the stands yesterday and he surely cannot ignore the obvious feelings of the fans.  A change has to be made in the summer.
