With the final curtain having fallen on a very forgettable 2017-18 Premier League season for Everton, the constant background noise about a new manager continues. So we will take a closer look at each of the main candidates.

Today the Mirror are reporting that Everton, this time in competition with West Ham, are both pursuing the ex-Watford boss Marco Silva.

West Ham who beat Everton in yesterday’s final game of the season, are also parting company with their boss David Moyes and want the Portuguese.

I’ve said before that I’m not convinced that the former Hull City manager Silva is the right man for Everton.

He was praised for the improvement in Hull City when he took over as manager during the 2016-17 season but they still got relegated.

He made City a harder team to beat especially when they went away from home. Creditable performances that season like Manchester United away were all well and good but in the end only got Hull a point.

If you look at his overall record it’s not that impressive. In 42 matches in the Premier League Silva has won 13 drawn 8 and lost 21.

You could argue he has not been in charge for any great length of time either at Hull or Watford. And neither club had a big transfer budget or were top four contenders for sure.

All that is true of course but it’s about more than just statistics.

Silva has always struck me as very similar to his fellow countryman Jose Mourinho, maybe that’s deliberate. He favours defensive organisation and rigid tactics to get results.

Now perhaps that’s ok for a club trying to survive in the Premier League.

But it’s also what Everton have played like under Sam Allardyce this season. And that’s not been good enough for most Blues fans as we all know.

There’s another aspect to all this as well. When Silva took over at Watford he seemed to have a similar effect as at Hull and the Hornets enjoyed a fine start to the season.

But when the Blues started to pursue him as the replacement for sacked Ronald Koeman, he was affected by it.

And of course so was the team as Watford’s form slumped and they eventually sacked him citing Everton’s interest as the main reason.

Perhaps that’s understandable but it gives the impression he is easily distracted by these rumours.

If he took over at Everton and the team started the season well, would he have his head turned at the first new rumour of interest from a so-called ‘bigger’ club?

Again perhaps it would be reasonable to expect this these days but it wouldn’t provide much stability for Everton something that the club desperately needs after all the turmoil of the last six months.
