Toffees Chasing Hertha Berlin Full-Back as Long-Term Baines Replacement
Everton may have found their long-term Leighton Baines replacement in the form of Hertha Berlin’s Marvin Plattenhardt.
The left-back is thought to be high on the Toffees’ list of transfer targets, with Sky Sports reporting that Everton are keen on bringing him in.
Plattenhardt will be part of Germany’s World Cup squad in Russia and provide Evertonians with the chance to view him up close ahead of any potential arrival.
Marco Silva and Marcel Brands have made a new left-back one of their top priorities in the close season as Baines edges towards his 34th birthday.
The veteran full-back has been a model of consistency throughout his 12-year spell at Goodison Park but age may begin to catch up with him in the next 12 to 18 months.
Brendan Galloway and Luke Garbutt have failed to become the understudy to Baines that many had hoped, while youngster Antonee Robinson still needs more game time out on loan before he can push for a first-team berth.
Plattenhardt, then, has become the latest name to be linked with the Blues and he would prove to be a useful addition to Silva’s senior ranks.
At 26 years of age, he is entering his prime as a footballer and has plenty of club and international experience under his belt.
The ex-Nuremberg defender has featured 108 times for recently relegated Bundesliga side Hertha during his three years at the club.
Plattenhardt also has six senior caps for Die Mannschaft despite only making his debut 12 months ago, and could be Joachim Low’s first choice in his favoured role in Russia over the next month.
With Hertha set to play in the 2.Bundesliga next term, Plattenhardt may be available for a cut-price fee and his wages should not be an issue should Everton wish to bring him in.
Watford were also thought to be interested in signing him, but the Hornets have since turned their attentions elsewhere to leave Everton favourites for his signature.
Plattenhardt’s agent would have to do business with director of football Brands whilst his client plays for Germany, given that the Premier League’s transfer window shuts a week before the new campaign kicks off.
That may prove to be a lengthy process, given that Plattenhardt will want to focus on helping his country defend their World Cup crown.
