Toffees apparently want two other United centre-halves if Mina or Rojo deals fail to materialise

Everton will continue to look to raid Manchester United for a new defender if they fail to land Marcos Rojo.

The Blues are reportedly interested in landing the Red Devils centre-half before Thursday’s transfer deadline after reaching an impasse with Barcelona over a deal for Yerry Mina.

According to teamtalk, however, Everton won’t walk away from United without prising a defender away from them even if they fail to reach an agreement for Rojo.

Teamtalk’s report suggests that the Toffees would opt to try and sign either Chris Smalling or Victor Lindelof instead if Rojo was unwilling to head to Goodison Park.

Everton manager Marco Silva made mention of needing defensive reinforcements after his team’s final pre-season friendly saw them fall to a 3-2 home defeat to Valencia.

The likes of Phil Jagielka and Michael Keane were the subject of negative reactions from Evertonians on social media after the loss due to their lack of pace and inability to defend properly.

That has once again reignited the debate – and desperation – for at least one new centre-back at the club with only five days of the summer window remaining.

Everton had hoped to lure Mina away from Barcelona after his impressive World Cup displays, but the sides cannot agree on a fee for his services.

That has led to Everton looking at alternatives to sign before Thursday, with Rojo chief among their targets.

The Argentina international is apparently up for sale but the reaction to this link has been lukewarm among Everton supporters at best.

Smalling and Lindelof may not be the answer either. Both struggled to stamp their mark with United last term and Jose Mourinho would be mad to sell two or even three of his centre-half options so close to the deadline.

A deal for Lindelof would likely be on loan, says teamtalk, with Smalling would be a permanent transfer.

Beggars may not be choosers as time ticks on, but surely Everton can do better than a trio of United defenders who Red Devils fans may want to see the back of.
