Blues finally make breakthrough over deal for Barcelona star on deadline day

Everton‘s long summer pursuit of Yerry Mina appears to be reaching a successful conclusion as he undergoes a medical in Barcelona.

The deal for the Colombia international seemed to be dead in the water, but various reports in Thursday’s media now claim the move could be back on.

Sky Sports and the Liverpool Echo have confirmed that Mina is undergoing medical tests in Catalonia ahead of a potential switch to Goodison Park.

Officials and medical staff from the Blues have flown out to Barcelona to conduct the tests and try and get all the necessary paperwork in order as the 5pm deadline looms large.

Everton have been chasing the 23-year-old since his impressive World Cup exploits.

Their negotiations with Barcelona, however, were proving tough and not even an appearance or two from director of football Marcel Brands was helping move the transfer along.

The Toffees were thought to have turned their attentions to other targets such as Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma and Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo as a result.

However, a deal for Mina is back on despite no word of a fee being agreed – and it is likely it will remain undisclosed if the centre-back heads to Merseyside.

Mina is the club’s top transfer priority with only three hours of the summer window before it slams shut later on Thursday.

Marcos Silva has been desperate to land a new centre-half all summer after he allowed Ramiro Funes Mori and Ashley Williams to leave permanently and on loan respectively.

Mina’s physical presence, pace and comfort on the ball would be welcome additions to a backline that has so far flattered to deceive under Silva in pre-season.

If he does arrive at Goodison, Mina will join former teammate Lucas Digne who traded Barcelona for Everton in an £18m transfer at the start of August.

The Blues are also interested in agreeing a season-long loan deal for Barcelona’s Andre Gomes, while the free transfer signing of Bernard is expected to be completed on Thursday afternoon.
