There are rumours circulating today that Cenk Tosun’s time at Everton might be coming to an end.

According to reports in the media, Tousn is set to leave Everton and return to Turkey in January.

The stories claim Tosun will be going back to Besiktas, the club he left when Everton signed the Turkish striker for £27 million just last January.

If he does leave this coming January, it might bring down the curtain on Tosun’s brief spell in English football.

I have mixed feelings about this situation as I think many Everton fans do.

Tosun has certainly played with plenty of commitment and endeavour since joining the Blues. And last season there were signs he might be able to produce the goods in the Premier League.

Ironically it was under the much-maligned reign of Sam Allardyce that Tosun produced his best form. He delivered several good performances and scored some fine goals. In particular in the win at home against Brighton he looked lively and a real goal threat.

That was in part due to the way Allardyce’s Everton were set up. I think Tosun thrives best when he can focus on finding space and getting into box and on the end of crosses and balls sent across goal. He is a striker who maybe best suits that kind of counter-attacking approach.

Under Marco Silva Everton don’t play that way. The emphasis is on pressing high up and playing on the front foot. And being part of a more fluid three or four man attack, Tosun is expected to do much more work off the ball.

Having said all that he has had some good chances this season, which he has missed. Although he did finally open his account this season in the home win against Fulham, Tosun has really struggled to find his form and confidence.

In last weekend’s win at Leicester, Silva experimented with playing Brazilian star Richarlison in a more central position and it worked well. Tosun didn’t start in that game although he came on as a sub later.

It does seem as though Silva, having given the Turkish international an extended run in the side, is now looking at other options in his position. If the loan move in the New Year happens, I feel many Toffees fans would only wish him well and hope he can revive his career back home.
