Rumours in the media today indicate that Everton might be willing to let defender Mason Holgate leave on loan in January.

Sky Sports are claiming that Everton will let the young centre-back leave the Blues in the next transfer window, at least for a while.

Holgate has now fallen back in the pecking order at Everton with the arrival of Kurt Zouma and Yerry Mina, (now that he is fit).

It’s also true at times he struggled to cope with the rigours of the Premier League when he did play earlier in the season. Although that was in part because the Toffees defence was beset with injury and suspension and he lacked any stability around him.

In my view Holgate does still have a future at Everton but perhaps in the short-term it makes sense for him to go out on loan and get some regular football, at another Premier League side or perhaps a Championship club.

Holgate has good pace and decent ability on the ball. He’s adaptable and has played at right back for the Blues as well as in the middle.

And he is also a self-confident player, something that a young centre-half certainly needs to help him to cope with the often steep learning curve that is Premier League football.

But on the downside the young defender has also shown a tendency to lose concentration and make sloppy mistakes, although that’s perhaps inevitable given his relative inexperience.

Hopefully a spell on loan will help to develop him as a player and he will come back to the Toffees a more consistent and mature player ready to fight for a place in the centre of the Blues defence.

I would like to see Holgate does not leave the Blues permanently and that he does return to Goodison Park as I feel he could play a part in the ongoing development of the club under Marco Silva and Marcel Brands.
