Tomorrow Everton are taking on Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park in the late televised game.

After a defeat, two draws and another defeat in their last four matches Everton need to ensure they get something from this game.

Spurs in contrast are on a great run having won four of their last five matches since they were beaten in the North London derby. They are playing some excellent football and will come to Goodison confident of taking all three points back to London.

The Blues own confidence has certainly taken a major knock in the last few days with those two away defeats, particularly the derby loss at Anfield, which seemed to precipitate their recent decline in form.

In some ways though the two draws at home to Newcastle and Watford were more troubling.

Everton were undone by a crazy last-minute goal by Liverpool in the derby, which although it shouldn’t have happened is the kind of thing that occasionally happens in football.

And defeat at Manchester City was hardly unexpected, although actually Everton had several great chances and might have got a draw.

The games that the Toffees drew emphasised the work still needed to make the side truly competitive.

Everton should certainly have beaten Newcastle United, they had enough chances but Watford in fact outplayed them and it was only that last-gasp free-kick from Lucas Digne that got the Blues a point.

The Manchester City game seemed to indicate that the Toffees were still playing with some attacking flair but basic defensive errors let the team down badly. they have to cut them out.

I wrote that I didn’t think the Toffees should have switched to a back three for that match and I do feel that the failure to try to pressure City higher up the pitch and particularly in midfield was mistaken.

Reverting to a flat back four and looking to play more on the front foot will suit Everton better and I think that is the way forward against Spurs tomorrow.

This is a tough game but I do think the Blues can win this one with a positive approach and, crucially, if they take their chances.
