Today’s transfer rumour update relates to a player possibly leaving Everton rather than a new one joining.

According to one of the online sports websites, sportwitness, Everton are currently standing in the way of the proposed transfer of midfielder Idrissa Gueye to PSG.

Apparently, so the story goes, the Senegal international has agreed personal terms with the French giants but the Blues are holding out for a lot more than PSG want to pay for him.

This is a possible transfer that has come a bit of out of left field as Gueye was not one of those players mooted for a move away from Goodison Park.

It would seem unlikely that Marco Silva will want to let Gueye go unless it is for a serious amount of cash as he has been an integral part of the Everton first team for most of the season.

Gana has played as the defensive lynchpin in the middle of the Blues team, most recently alongside Andre Gomes.

He has been his usual busy self; winning the ball, breaking up attacks and making plenty of timely interceptions. But his distribution has at times been poor and although he is effective in what he does he is a limited player.

If this transfer were to happen it would surely have to be soon to give the Toffees the chance to find a replacement before the January window shuts.

This leads us back to a story we featured yesterday regarding Everton’s supposed interest in the Colombian midfield enforcer Wilmar Barrios.

But Barrios doesn’t provide any more of an attacking contribution.

Like Gueye he is essentially a defensive and holding midfield player. So such a set of player moves would be essentially a couple of like-for-like transfers.

Of course none of this may happen. As with many of these transfer stories, this one probably needs to be taken with a healthy degree of scepticism.
