The stories about Idrissa Gueye’s future are being ramped up with reports in various media that Everton might consider selling him to PSG this month.

This rumour has been bubbling along for several days now. According to reports, PSG are actively looking for a defensive midfielder and have apparently targeted the Everton player.

The French club are running away with Ligue 1 again this season. But they haven’t made the impact they would like in the Champions League recently, conceding goals and looking vulnerable defensively. Presumably they feel a player like Gueye can make a difference in that competition.

This rumour strikes me as a little odd. I think Gueye is certainly a decent player for Everton who works hard, puts in plenty of running and wins more than his fair share of tackles and interceptions in the middle.

However he can sometimes be a bit erratic in his positional sense and his passing is very inconsistent. To be honest he doesn’t seem like exactly the kind of player a club like PSG would look to buy.

Given his age and the virtually unlimited financial resources PSG command you might think they would be looking at a younger, more high-profile player.

However it may have something to do with the fact they have been implicated in recent investigations into the financial policies of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The French giants spent an extraordinary amount of money signing Neymar and Kylian Mbappe and may now be looking for more affordable options in the transfer market.

Everton are supposedly asking for at least £40 million if PSG are serious in wanting to sign Gueye. That would I think represent a good deal for the Toffees, especially as the Senegal player only cost £7 million and is close to 30 years of age.

If he was to leave this month, then the Blues would have to find a replacement quickly as I don’t think they have anyone in the current squad who could adequately replace him.
