Blues boss Marco Silva has stated publically that Everton will not be signing any more players this January.

According to the Liverpool Echo Silva is not looking to strengthen in this transfer window. This is not exactly the sort of news that Everton supporters will probably want to hear given the poor form the current squad of players are displaying.  another defeat

Everton slumped to another defeat, 1-2 away at Southampton on Saturday and produced another underwhelming display in a game they could have lost by four or five goals.

Signing players for the sake of it is not a good strategy, however it seems obvious that the Blues need at least four or five further additions if they are going to make any real progress and be competitive, let alone win anything.

The Blues need a long-term solution at right-back, another quality centre-half, more creativity and goal threat from midfield and if the current group of forwards can’t step up, a new striker.

All this is a tall order for sure. And it is it seems that making any new signings is dependent on the Toffees selling before they can make any further moves in the transfer market.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

That’s fine up to a point as there is certainly a group of players that the Blues need to move on. Those might include Oumar Niasse, Cenk Tosun and probably others such as Seamus Coleman, Muhamed Besic and James McCarthy too.

However Everton need to try to build a strong squad of 25 or more players to ensure they can cope with injuries and any build up of games, for example due to a fixture pile-up.

And the rumours that PSG were after Idrissa Gueye indicates that Everton are only going to be able to sign real quality if they sell some of their better current performers.

This is going to present a problem for the club if the Blues are going to have any realistic chance of building a squad with the necessary size, quality and depth to put Everton back amongst the elite of English football. At the moment that looks a forlorn hope.
