One of the most pleasing aspects of the 2-0 win Everton managed over Chelsea on Sunday was the performance of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

He was excellent and so the question is was this a breakthrough game for the young forward, and can he build on it to help Everton to finish the current season strongly.

Calvert-Lewin has always had potential and has shown in odd flashes this campaign the ability that might make him a good Premier League player.

However too often he has frustrated with inconsistent form and inevitable mistakes in too many games.

But on Sunday the former English youth international produced undoubtedly his best performance in a royal blue Everton shirt.

Against Chelsea he led the line with verve and energy, combining great movement, physical determination and creativity in a superb all-round centre-forward display.

The only thing missing was a goal to cap his efforts. And that is the one thing that he still needs to add to his game. So far this season he has netted six times in the Premier League and that is a key part of his game he must improve on.

So can Calvert-Lewin build on this and consistently deliver such performances for the Blues? If so then he might just be the answer to Everton’s search for a centre-forward to build their attack around.

That’s not likely to be the case just yet however and the Toffees will almost certainly have to go into the transfer market this summer for such a player.

Calvert-Lewin’s display though is a confirmation of the importance of the club’s youth academy producing talent for the first-team.  This will be an important resource for the club going forward.

Given the escalating cost of modern transfer fees and the difficulty attracting top quality players, bringing through home-grown talent is crucial.

At the moment the Toffees Under-21 team is on course for a second Premier League Two title in the last few seasons. This is a great potential resource for the Blues to draw upon.

Too many young players struggle to get a chance at Premier League clubs and the Blues can surely buck that trend to their advantage.
