It is inevitably a quiet week for Everton with the latest international break this weekend meaning no Premier League matches are taking place.

However the rumour mill of course keeps churning and the latest one that relates to Everton is a story about the future of Andre Gomes.

The Guardian claims that while the Toffees are moving closer to possibly sealing a permanent deal to sign the Barcelona midfielder, Tottenham have complicated things by apparently expressing interest in signing him.

Gomes has impressed generally this season, although his form and influence have been less consistent in recent weeks. But he had a good game on Sunday against Chelsea as the Blues finally beat a top six side.

I think he would definitely be worth signing long-term, if only because frankly Everton don’t have any other genuinely creative midfield options. His quality on the ball and ability to make and score goals from midfield is something the Blues sorely need more of.

Gomes has been quoted saying that he has settled well on Merseyside but has still not committed to the Toffees, although it’s unlikely he would force his way into the Barcelona team if he returned to the Camp Nou this summer.

So all that points to a possible deal being done by Everton. However any interest from a club like Spurs might just make that harder.

The north London club could offer European football, (something Everton are unlikely to unless the Blues manage a great final run in the league), and that may well be Champions League football too.

Tottenham have been looking for another midfield playmaker for a while. They made a last-ditch, but unsuccessful move for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish on last summer’s transfer deadline day.  The Portuguese player, who is similar to Grealish, could then well fit the bill for them.

One thing that might still work in the Toffees favour is that Spurs aren’t likely to have a lot of money to spend, having just moved into their new multi-million pound stadium.

Hopefully the Blues can head off any potential move by Spurs and will secure Gomes to a long-term deal as part of the club’s summer transfer dealings.
