Manager Marco Silva has been talking about the frustrating inconsistencies in his Everton team this season following Saturday’s dismal 2-0 defeat at Fulham.

Everton supporters were left scratching their heads again as the Blues failed miserably to build on the momentum of their previous three straight wins.

Despite coming into the match in perhaps their best form if the whole season, the Toffees contrived to get deservedly beaten at a relegated team with one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League.

In the Liverpool Echo article Silva says he doesn’t understand why Everton keep producing such lacklustre efforts, especially away from home. And he indicates that there is something ‘not normal’ about this erratic play.

This isn’t a very comforting thing to hear from the manager. You might hope he would indicate he has some idea of how to tackle this issue.

The Echo also point out a very disturbing statistic, that the Blues have not managed to win a single game from a losing position at all this campaign.

It’s worrying to think that Everton lack the mental strength, focus, motivation or work ethic to turn around such losing positions.

This is a fundamental part of a successful side that can compete consistently. Having talent and turning up for bigger matches or when your on Sky Sports is fine, but isn’t going to enable you to get enough points over the whole season.

The way a team competes successfully over the course of a season is to go to places like Fulham and win, even if it’s a difficult game and not necessarily very pretty to watch.

The Blues inability to manage this is going to severely limit the team’s chances of making progress in the next campaign, let alone win anything.

Another piece of fallout from the weekend’s game is the news that the FA are charging Andre Gomes with violent conduct after his challenge on Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Gomes’ tackle was symptomatic of the frustration and failure of Everton’s performance on Saturday. So we will wait and see what the FA charge actually means in practice.
