Turkish international striker Cenk Tosun has apparently insisted he wants to stay at Everton and fight for his place next season.

Tosun has had a difficult time at Everton since signing in January 2018 during the ill-fated Sam Allardyce era. But despite a struggle to nail down a place in the team, he wants to stay at Goodison Park and fight for his place.

When Tosun joined Everton from Besiktas, at the same time as Theo Walcott arrived from Arsenal, there was uncertainty as to whether the Turkish striker would be able to make a genuine impact in the Premier League.

The step up from his home country to perhaps the toughest league in the world, was always going to be challenging.

He initially had a tough time getting into the team and finding his feet in the English game. And it took him until the Burnley game away in March 2018 to register his first goal for the Blues.

However this didn’t then lead to a flood of goals and Tosun continued to struggle to get into the side regularly. This was despite the fact that Everton were having a torrid time and finding it very hard to score goals.

And at the end of his first five months on Merseyside, Tosun had scored five goals in the Premier League. So there was uncertainty about his future going into another summer transfer window.

After Allardyce was sacked and Marco Silva took over in the Goodison hot-seat, Tosun’s future looked hard to call. Silva brought in another forward in Brazilian Richarlison but the majority of his signings were to improve other areas of the side.

So Tosun was still an Everton player at the start of the 2018-19 season.

But it became clear pretty early on that Silva didn’t seem to rate Tosun and wasn’t willing to give him much of an opportunity.

Although he did start a couple of games early in the season, pretty soon Silva was experimenting with alternatives. He was persisting with others, in particular Richarlison, playing as a centre-forward.

Soon Tosun was relegated to an occasional substitute role. This became very much his position as the season continued.

During the final third of the season the Blues settled on a new-look attack in which Dominic Calvert-Lewin was restored to the centre-forward role. This re-booted attack flourished as Everton finished the season strongly.

In truth although I think the majority of Evertonians would wish him well as he certainly seems a likeable character, it hasn’t worked out for him.

So with another transfer window round the corner there have been rumours that Tosun might be leaving as Silva looks to trim his squad significantly.

One of the main areas of likely transfer dealings, is to sign another forward with stories such as one this week about the Blues signing Danny Welbeck.

Given all this I think that it would probably be in Tosun’s and Everton’s best interests to move on and try to re-build his career elsewhere.
