One past transfer story involving Everton that might be revived this summer is the possible move of midfielder Idrissa Gueye to pastures new.

As Everton fans will remember Gueye was keen to move to Paris when the French giants made an apparent move for him in January.

It didn’t happen then and to his great credit Gueye just knuckled down and played superbly for the remainder of the season. But given how the French club did seem very keen on him, they might come back again to sign the Senegal international.

And while the focus of transfer speculation has been on finding another striker and nailing down the long-term futures of Andre Gomes and Kurt Zouma, the future of Gueye is just as important.

His work rate, energy and ball-winning qualities are fundamental to how Everton play. If he does leave the Blues to replace him.

While sometimes he can be a little like a headless chicken and lose possession a bit too often, generally he is  a very effective and consistent midfield dynamo. He does the necessary spadework that allows other players like Gomes to shine.

PSG were supposedly prepared to offer around £20 million in January, which seemed like a decent amount for a 29-year-old to be honest.

Although PSG do not look likely to come back for him, if Gueye himself does decide he still wants to leave, Leicester City’s Wilfrid Ndidi would be a very good fit to replace him.

He’s a similar player but at 22 much younger of course. Ndidi is an excellent defensive midfielder with all the qualities to replace Gueye.

The Nigerian international is, like Gueye, a bit of an underrated footballer doing the water-carrying that every successful team still needs.

Interestingly Ndidi is also a very good player in the air, something that could prove very useful at set-pieces.

Of course Leicester City are probably unlikely to consider selling a player of Ndidi’s ability. But perhaps a significant bid might persuade them to re-think.

One final unrelated point. Let’s hope and pray, (although I’m not religious!), that Tottenham can make it third time lucky after two league defeats to them lot across the park and win tonight!! Come on you Spurs!
