Trippier would suit Everton

One of the areas of the Everton team that needs improving is the right-back position. So given the rumours that Tottenham are considering selling him would  Kieran Trippier be a good signing for the Blues?

Although the current incumbent at right-back, Seamus Coleman recovered his form somewhat in the last third of the season to finish strongly, I still think Everton need to consider looking at a replacement for the Irishman.

Coleman has struggled to sustain his previous form since suffering those two horrendous injuries that kept him out for so long. In addition Coleman is 30 and although he has given great service to the Blues since his bargain signing, a long-term replacement will be needed soon.

Furthermore Everton’s preferred style of play under Marco Silva is heavily dependent on the dynamic attacking contribution of the full-backs. The importance of the width and creativity they provide and their link-up play with the forwards is crucial.

It’s also important to look at the wider trends in the Premier League. Although it’s painful to admit one the of the reasons for Liverpool’s resurgence over the past two seasons is the increasing influence of their full-backs, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Both made a vital contribution to Liverpool’s attacking play. Between them the two full-backs made an outstanding 23 assists last season. That kind of impact was key to the Reds success as they so nearly won the title and then clinched the Champions League yet again, beating Tripper’s Spurs side of course in the final.

The team that edged them out in the Premier League, (thank God!), was Manchester City. And they also have full-backs who make a key contribution to their all-action style.

After a superb debut season in 2018-19 from left-back Lucas Digne who looks to have nailed down that position for a long time to come, the Toffees need to ensure they have a player on the other flank equally capable of a similar contribution.

So that leads us to Trippier. The Spurs star has been a mainstay of the Tottenham team recently, but it seems as though the north London club are prepared to let him go.

This is a little surprising as Trippier has impressed with his performances, leading to a call-up to the England squad. The right-back was a late developer in terms of the Spurs squad getting his chance when Kyle Walker left for Manchester City.

Everton were briefly linked with the England man a few months ago. And the possibility of him leaving London might just reawaken interest in him from Silva.

The 28-year-old is a very similar player to Digne. He has a lot of the same strengths and very few weaknesses. All this would make him a terrific addition, complimenting the French left-back perfectly in his attacking and defensive play.

The Spurs man is keen to stay in England in the Premier League if he possibly can. Of course in truth Trippier is likely to want to move to a Champions League team if he has the chance to do so.

However might Everton just be able to persuade him to join the quietly developing revolution taking shape at Goodison Park?
