With continued speculation about whether Everton will sign another striker, could youngster Ellis Simms help solve the ongoing issues with that position.

Simms has just enjoyed a sensational season with the Everton Under-18’s last time round netting a hugely impressive 46 times for the team.

That outstanding contribution led to him getting a just reward with the Blues giving him a first professional contract earlier this summer.

Everton have struggled to find a striker with the ability to score regularly in the Premier League. Last season Cenk Tosun, Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were all tried in that position without ever fully satisfying the Toffees management they can score the goals needed.

Although Calvert-Lewin was the incumbent at the end of the season and developed to become an excellent all-round centre-forward and effective focal point for the team’s attack, there are still question marks about whether he can score enough goals.

So given all that, according to reports in the Daily Mirror, Marco Silva is resisting any moves for Simms to go out on loan and sees him having a role in the first-team next season. He could be ready to give him a shot at helping to resolve the club’s persistent goal scoring problems up front.

If that were the case it would be quite a long-shot considering his youth and lack of experience. But then it would also save the Blues a small fortune if he did get a chance and re-produced anything like his form for the under-18’s.

Bringing a player through the ranks who can then make that step up to the Premier League is always good to see. And if they’re successful, it will save a club millions in transfer and also these days, agent’s fees.

But the one position where it is often hardest of all to bring through a youth team player, is up front. Even eventually successful players like Harry Kane needed several spells on loan before they finally found their feet in the top flight and started regularly scoring goals.

It is a much worn out cliché but it does seem to be true that consistently finding the back of the net is the toughest part of football.

Having a player who can be relied on to show the skill, concentration and cool head in front of goal is almost, priceless.

Everton do have form here having not so long ago brought through the ranks another striking phenomenon who went on to great things; Wayne Rooney.

I’m not suggesting Simms is necessarily as good as Rooney, or will go on to achieve what he did in the game. But he’s undoubtedly a highly rated a young striker with pace and power who certainly seems to know where the goal is. So who knows what he can achieve if given a chance?
