In some very welcome and positive news for Everton, the club have said that injured midfielder Andre Gomes’ surgery went very well and he is ‘expected to make a full recovery’.

That is fantastic to hear and along with all other Everton fans, I wish him the very best for as speedy a recovery as possible. And as I hope is clear, I deliberately choose an image of him taken yesterday well before his injury.

There is still a long way to go for Gomes, and his rehabilitation will be long and hard, but it’s great to know that the surgery went so well.

The fallout from yesterday’s game at Goodison Park and Gomes’ horrific injury has been considerable.

Interestingly there was much animated discussion about the game and the decisions made by officials on the BBC’s Match of The Day last night.

Truth be told ‘MOTD’ isn’t renowned for taking a sympathetic attitude to the Blues situation generally. However yesterday there was a real recognition that Everton had been seriously hard done by and that the game might prove a watershed in the debate about VAR.

There is a growing sense that VAR and the way it’s being used, is having a seriously negative impact on the game. The escalating and almost weekly examples of bizzare and highly controversial decisions is having a very significant, detrimental effect on the Premier League and its reputation.

In their own inimitable and predictable way the FA are doing their best to make a total mess of this system. Either they adopt the approach seen in a country like Italy, where the referee uses the pitch-side monitor regularly, or if not let’s get rid of it altogether..?

Moving on from such frustrating stuff, perhaps the most satisfying aspect of yesterday’s game was the performance of new centre-back partnership Mason Holgate and Yerry Mina.

True a dreadful Spurs side didn’t exactly put them under huge pressure! Perhaps if Harry Kane had played it might have been different.

However it was good to see Holgate get his chance and his qualities; pace and ability on the ball, well complemented Mina’s defensive spade work and increasing physical dominance.

In addition Tom Davies and Fabian Delph also dovetailed well in midfield. In fact Davies was probably the Toffee best performer yesterday.

He was busy and energetic and always looking to play positively and use the ball well. At one point he hit a brilliant defence-splitting pass to Theo Walcott I think. If that ball had been from Kevin De Bruyne everyone would have been waxing lyrical about it.

This could be something to build on as such a potential pairing is going to be a very important going forward as Everton adjust to life without Andre Gomes.
