Dreadful Everton downed by Canaries

Everton crashed to an almost unbelievable defeat at Goodison Park today as they were beaten 0-2 by the side that started the day bottom of the Premier League; Norwich City.

I don’t even want to spend any significant time analysing this performance. Suffice to say that Norwich had obviously learnt from the Sheffield United playbook, playing deep and frustrating Everton with virtual impunity, and it worked again.

Despite that tactical nous from today’s opponents, this result is simply disgraceful and utterly unacceptable. How can the Toffees subside to such a pitiful result against a side struggling so badly for form and confidence?

The Blues had been on a half-decent run of form and had managed a psychologically important first away win of the season before the international break.

Norwich for their part hadn’t won a Premier League match since beating champions Manchester City back in September. As always, the Blues proved they were the perfect team to play when you desperately need a win.

And how much more of this dross do we as long-suffering fans of the club have to put up with? Silva must not be the Everton manager when the Toffees take on high-flying Leicester City next weekend.

I have no confidence though that the board at Goodison Park will make a decision anytime soon. Given their recent inaction, it seems that Silva would still be the Blues boss even if we were playing in the Championship, something looking more and more likely these days!

If they have any real strategic vision they would have a plan ready to put in place straight away and already be contacting a coach like Mauricio Pochettino and/or Rafa Benitez to take over as soon as humanly possible.

Either of these men would be acceptable as a replacement, even the Canaries boss Daniel Farke, who I’ve previously said has some qualities, would seem a better option at the moment.

I’ve previously suggested Benitez would be a good fit, (as indeed have plenty of others), but in many ways Pochettino is the more intriguing and potentially exciting prospect.

The timing of it all also seems almost fated. Pochettino leaving Tottenham just this week and the desperate state of things at Goodison, is a very interesting juxtaposition.

I’ve written about how the Argentinian would possibly be a good fit for Everton. His qualities would I think be very well suited to bringing out the best in this massively underachieving squad.

But it might take Pochettino a while to get this Toffees team in shape and so once again fans would have to be patient, something that’s probably and understandably, in short supply amongst many Evertonians at the moment.

Benitez in contrast would actually be more like the route Spurs have taken bringing in Jose Mourinho; hiring a coach with a proven track record of trophy-winning success who can hit the ground running, but who sets his teams up in a pragmatic and defensive way.

Frankly I wouldn’t care if we played ten men behind the ball every week, al la Allardyce, if we were winning games, its got that bad! If things don’t change soon then God only knows where Everton go from here…
