After his sacking from Tottenham recently, Mauricio Pochettino has said he is taking a little time off but will soon be ‘open to projects in Europe’ again. Everton should be one of those projects.

I’m sure that not all Everton supporters would consider Pochettino as a suitable candidate to replace Marco Silva, if or when he goes.

It’s true the Argentinian hasn’t won anything, although his Spurs side might well have won last season’s Champions League final.

He’s not my first choice either to replace Silva, that would be Rafa Benitez. However he has proved to be a more than competent manager and tactician and has a great track record with young players, helping them develop and full-fill their potential at Tottenham.

He also led Spurs to four consecutive Champions League finishes and established them as the leading club in north London, something none of his predecessors had managed in decades.

In addition, Pochettino managed to maintain Spurs position despite several summers of little investment in his playing resources, due to the cost of financing Tottenham’s new stadium.

Ironically that eventually came back to bite him perhaps as Spurs have struggled badly this campaign, and those struggles on the pitch eventually cost him his job. But that is not ultimately his fault if the purse strings at Spurs were being tightly constrained and he wasn’t able to sign the players he wanted, something he did hint at before his sacking.

So should Everton being seeking to establish contact with Pochettino? I think the answer is yes for several reasons.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

First of all the evidence from his time at Southampton and Tottenham, indicates that he has got the skills and experience to considerably improve a young and underachieving team, which Everton most certainly are.

Secondly I think the Blues need to show the kind of ambition and determination to at least try to secure the best available people for the managerial position at Goodison Park. I think that Pochettino would fall into that category.

Evertonians deserve to see their club making the maximum effort to get the best man they can for the job, just as Leicester City and Spurs believe they have, and now Arsenal have shown themselves willing to try and do.

Would Pochettino come to Everton? I don’t know, but the club must show they are interested. Although he wouldn’t necessarily guarantee success, (who would?), such an appointment would certainly make a change from what we’ve been served up with since David Moyes left in 2013.

*Stop Press* As we reported a few days ago, Richarlison has agreed to a new contract and signed an extension keeping him at Everton until 2024.
