There have been uncertain and confusing signals around about whether or not Everton will be signing midfielder Adrien Rabiot from Juventus this January.

Rabiot’s name surfaced early on as the January transfer window opened, and Everton were strongly linked with a move for the PSG player currently on loan at Juventus.

Carlo Ancelotti is known to admire the player and according to these rumours, would like to bring him to Goodison Park this month.

Then further stories have emerged that the Blues were still in pole position to sign him, despite interest from Arsenal and Tottenham and that a loan deal, with an option to buy the player in the summer, is the likely way forward.

However news coming out of the Italian club now seems to indicate that the player himself would prefer to stay put in Turin, for the moment at least.

So that appears to be the end of that.

In other transfer news today, the Toffees are again being linked with another midfielder in Europe, Steven N’Zonzi. He’s another player who is on loan from his club, Sevilla, and is currently in Turkey with Fernabache.

The Frenchman is though 31 years-old and it’s unlikely that Marcel Brands or Ancelotti would be interested in bringing in a player of that advanced age.

What other players might it be worth Ancelotti looking at as he tries to improve the Toffees lamentably underachieving squad?

Finding capable and reliable midfielders must be a priority, especially if the rumours that Ancelotti is looking to offload Gylfi Sigurdsson are true.

One young but highly effective defensive midfielder, is the 17 year-old Eduardo Camavinga who currently plays in France with Rennes.

Although he is very young, he is quite mature for his age and appears to be a similar player to the departed Idissa Gueye, who Everton have not replaced since he signed for PSG in the summer.

Camavinga is an energetic player, gets in plenty of tackles and interceptions and would offer a solid defensive screen in midfield, something Everton certainly need. He also has an excellent passing success rate.

Given his age he would also fit into the type of player Brands’ likes, and he could be available at a reasonable fee especially as Rennes are hardly one of Europe’s top clubs. Although 17 might be a little too youthful even for him to consider!
