Well I said yesterday that there were plenty of rumours that Everton were interested in Steven Nzonzi and it looks more and more likely the former Stoke City midfielder might be coming to Goodison Park this month.

I was uncertain as to whether Nzonzi’s age might put off the Everton brass, but according to the Liverpool Echo, Carlo Ancelotti is interested in bringing the 31-year-old Frenchman back to the Premier League during this transfer window.

I guess that to some extent it’s a question of simply getting in bodies before the window shuts, given the paucity of options in midfield, the possibility of selling one or more of those already on the books, and the awful form of those existing players.

Anyway Nzonzi has plenty of experience, has of course played in England before and seems to be keen to escape his loan spell at Galatasaray in Turkey and return to English football.

Nzonzi is a solid enough player, strong defensively and a good accurate passer of the ball. He would probably add a bit more quality and consistency to the Blues midfield, although he’s 31, not a very creative player and he seems to have a habit of picking up yellow cards.

He might though make a strong central midfield partnership with Ivory Coast international Jean-Philippe Gbamin, if we ever see the summer signing play for Everton again!

In other news, there are reports of confrontations this week between fans and some of the players following last Sunday’s derby debacle.

I’m not at all surprised this has happened. There is only so much that loyal and long-suffering supporters can take when they see such a dreadfully embarrassing performance like that, especially in such an important game for Evertonians.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

The players today get paid an absolute fortune and fans have to fork out a huge amount of their hard-earned income for the right to watch such dross.

Too many mercenary footballers these days getting paid ludicrous sums of money and living in an insulated bubble of media adulation, fail to appreciate what these games mean to us fans.

I always feel that one image that sums up the increasing distance between supporters and the players is when you see them striding off a team bus with their headphones on, music blaring as they strut past the waiting fans and into the tunnel.

Maybe it might do them all some good to be exposed to a bit of anger and genuine passion from fans and realise just what it means to wear that royal blue shirt.
