As we near the last quarter of the January transfer window, Everton have been seemingly linked with virtually every single player being touted as available. The latest rumours now say the Blues want ex-Liverpool midfielder Emre Can.

The Liverpool Echo via HITC website claim that Everton are considering trying to bring Can back to Merseyside this month to help solve the seemingly endless problems in midfield.

The former Liverpool man, has been struggling to hold down a regular place at Juventus in a very competitive midfield and supposedly wants out of the Italian giants as soon as possible, preferably this month.

Such a move if it were indeed to happen, would probably be controversial for many Evertonians. Can last played for the Reds back in 2018, which is not very long ago and it’s been a long time since an ex-Kopite pulled on the royal blue shirt. In fact the last ones I remember were Gary Ablet and Peter Beardsley back in the early nineties.

So does he represent the best option for the Blues?

He was quite effective at Liverpool and he looks like a pretty decent holding midfield player. The German international has a strong all-round defensive game and would probably therefore represent a sound investment, especially for about £30 million. At 26 he is also still relatively young, which fits with the Blues transfer and investment strategy.

Can would hopefully provide a good defensive screen in front of the Toffees backline and would also be able to contribute something concrete in attack as well.

There are other midfield options, but time is running out for the Blues to get someone decent in before that transfer window slams shut.

So maybe this would be the best opportunity to get a player who would add reinforcement in the middle of the park. I’m personally not bothered that he has played for them across the park to be honest, frankly the Toffees just need the best available players regardless.

The Juventus player has said in public that he wouldn’t ever contemplate playing for Manchester United, but he might be open to a move to Everton?

In other transfer news, rumours are swirling around that several clubs are trying to prise Mason Holgate away from Goodison Park.

At the same time the Mirror say that England manager Gareth Southgate is considering calling up Holgate for some upcoming international friendlies.

Whether any of these rumours are true or not, Everton should certainly not contemplate selling Holgate at all.

I always felt that he could become a good central defender if given the chance. And although it’s still early days in his career, Holgate is showing plenty of signs that he is on the way to becoming a fine player for club and perhaps, country too.

He’s also going to be increasingly important as Carlo Ancelotti looks to adopt a passing game out of defence as part of his long-term rebuilding plans.
