With five days left in the January transfer window, Everton are once more being heavily linked with a move for the Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino.

This rumour was a constant story early on in the window only for the player to apparently snub a potential move to Everton.

Now as time ticks on and the final week of the window begins, this potential transfer deal looks like it might be back on after all as the Blues begin to run out of time and options.

The Italian paper Gazzetta Dello Sport have a story that the deal for Vecino is close and he is now open to a move to Goodison Park. This is because Inter are about to bring in the Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, which would then, the paper claims pave the way for the Uruguayan midfielder to join the Toffees.

In addition Inter are about to sign Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen and that would mean that Vecino would be further surplus to requirements at the San Siro.

Vecino isn’t a headline grabbing signing and is perhaps a little on the older side at 28, but he is a decent holding midfielder who likes to get forward on the ball too.

Would he add the necessary additional drive and quality to the Blues midfield play? Well I don’t know but we’ll see if this deal gets over the line.

The other major transfer rumour that won’t go away involves the Brazilian forward Everton Soares. It’s been repeatedly claimed that the Toffees are working on a deal for the young Gremio forward and club namesake.

To me this one sounds a lot less realistic than Vecino. However Soares does probably want the chance to test himself in Europe and obviously knows the Blues Brazilian forward and his international team-mate Richarlison very well.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Soares tends to play on the left and likes to cut inside from there. This wouldn’t seem to be the Toffees priority area for strengthening in attack given that Richarlison, and the club’s other Brazilian, Bernard, also often tend to operate there.

Recently though Richarlison has been playing up front with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Carlo Ancelotti also seems to be keen on shifting Bernard to a more central role, playing behind them. So perhaps Soares could come in and play on the left.

He is also the right sort of age and if he were to prove a success in the Premier League would therefore provide that potential sell-on value that Marcel Brands likes. A loan deal makes sense giving the club the opportunity to make his move permanent in the summer if he works out.
