Andre Gomes closer to returning for Everton
By James Reeve
Everton midfielder Andre Gomes is getting closer to making a return to Premier League action after suffering a horrific injury back in November.
Andre Gomes is set to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly match between Everton players today, (Sunday 16th February), 105 days after a Son Heung-Min tackle resulted in a fractured dislocation in his ankle.
The Portuguese international had been an influential player for the Toffees prior to his injury, moving to Goodison Park on a permanent transfer last summer after an impressive season-long loan spell in 2018/19.
In 35 total matches for the Blues, Gomes showed exceptional passing ability, completing 83.3% of all pass attempts, racking up 1303 total completions – averaging 35 completed passes per game.
After the injury, which originally saw Son sent off before it was overturned on appeal, Gomes required surgery and it was largely expected that he had been lost for the rest of the 2019/20 season.
Now, however, it seems that the 26-year-old could see Premier League action before the season is out if he is able to come through the friendly match without any issues.
Having the 2016 Euro’s champion return to the line-up will be a huge boost for manager Carlo Ancelotti, who hasn’t been able to work with Gomes at all since taking over from Marco Silva in December.

With Jean-Philippe Gbamin also having been sidelined for the majority of the season, it means that Everton could finally see their two best central midfield options don the blue and white together again.
Understandably, Everton fans will be paying close attention to any reports that emerge as a result of today’s friendly match, hoping for the best possible news with regards to Gomes’ fitness.
If Gomes is able to prove he is ready to return, he could be in line for an appearance on the bench when the Toffees travel to the Emirates Stadium to play Arsenal next Saturday (23rd February) looking to keep their impressive Premier League form going.
