Despite no football currently being played, Everton have been linked with a move for Dutch winger Steven Berghuis, who could be worth taking a gamble on.

Feyenoord captain Steven Berghuis is the latest name to be linked with a move to Carlo Ancelotti‘s Everton in the summer transfer window, having been one of the top performers in the Eredivisie over the past few seasons.

Ancelotti is clearly looking to establish a team in his own image, with many of the rumoured targets being forwards or attacking wingers that would provide excellent support for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison in the Italian’s 4-4-2 system.

The 28-year-old right-winger has been a prolific attacking threat since joining Feyenoord in 2016, scoring 52 goals and contributing assists for a further 39 in 118 league appearances, earning an Eredivisie title at the end of his first season with the club.

After a conservative first season in Rotterdam, where he scored seven goals and assisted five, Berghuis has hit double digits in goals in each of the following three seasons.

Everton has needed to improve their luck front of goal in recent seasons and look to have a promising partnership developing between Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin, but adding even more talent around them could help improve the team’s fortunes in the long run.

Berghuis is a bit of a gamble, however, as he isn’t a young prospect showing a lot of promise, having been around for a number of years and arguably currently being in his prime.

The Dutchman, capped 15 times by his country, has already tried his luck in English football in recent memory, having a largely unsuccessful spell with Watford during the 2015/16 season – a campaign that ultimately saw him move on to his current club.

Since returning to his homeland, however, Berghuis has played the best football of his career and has shown real consistency in the Dutch top tier, arguably taking the next step in his development that he couldn’t achieve while a bit-part at Watford.

His talents deserve another chance at success in the Premier League and Ancelotti could be the perfect manager to get the best out of him, benefitting the Toffees and seeing the club pose an even deadlier threat in front of opposition goals.

Everton arguably need a bit of a clear out in the summer, if football operations have returned by then, and Berghuis could be an interesting player to fill the void of some players that are expected to be out the door by the time.
