As there is further continuing stories about when the Premier League might start up again, in a transfer rumour round-up Everton are being linked with a move for another young midfielder, Newcastle United’s Matty Longstaff.

The young Magpies player is the latest in a seemingly endless line of youthful midfielders that Everton are supposedly tracking.

The Toffees are certainly in the market for new central midfield talent to provide more energy, drive and quality so given that, and of course the lack of any other stories, these rumours keep on surfacing.

Longstaff is currently negotiating over a new contract extension with Newcastle and those talks have apparently stalled, leaving the door open for other clubs to possibly move for him.

Looking at the 20-year-old, he doesn’t look the type of player that the Blues would seriously consider signing.

Longstaff is not a defensive player and lacks the sort of characteristics that I would think Everton require in a new midfield recruit. So I would doubt that the Toffees would be interested even if he were available very cheap.

There’s another aspect to this, which is the proposed takeover of the northeast club by the Saudi royal family’s consortium.

This controversial potential takeover, is not certain yet, but if it were to happen then it would radically change the financial situation on Tyneside.

Players like Longstaff will almost certainly be on their way out if the new owners do spend big, which is more than likely.

Another young midfield star, Wendel, now being connected with the Toffees, is a Brazilian currently playing for Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon.

This report comes from a Portuguese website who claim that Everton are facing competition from Carlo Ancelotti’s former club, Napoli for the player.

Wendel is a player more like the kind of midfielder that the Blues might consider as they scout for new recruits ready for the summer transfer window. He’s a creative player who might well fit in with the current Toffees team and add another Brazilian to the mix.

Anyway this is another other highly speculative story with little to back it up I’m sure!

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Turning to yet another transfer rumour, and there is more to story that emerged earlier in the year, this time concerning a defender, Marash Kumballa.

The Albanian centre-back has been playing in Italy for Verona and has attracted interest from other clubs in Europe, supposedly including the Blues.

Now, it’s claimed he has sabotaged his situation with Verona and they may well be persuaded to sell him if a suitable offer comes along.

Kumballa would represent a interesting possibility to shore up the Toffees defence.

He looks like a solidly old-fashioned central defender who would offer plenty of extra defensive strength. He would also fit with the Brands’ age-range too.
